In high-pressure jobs, whether you’re driving for Uber or working retail, even the smallest act of kindness can completely shift your day. When things get overwhelming, it’s often unexpected compassion from a stranger or coworker that helps people push through and reminds them how much those little moments matter.
I drive for Uber, and most rides are pretty quiet. Last night, I picked up a man from a hospital. I glanced in the mirror and saw he was crying, so I turned off the radio.
“My wife just died,” he said. “I have to tell our kids.”
At that point, I canceled the ride. Instead of taking him straight home, I drove to a quiet overlook. I got out of the car, and he broke down completely. I just stayed there with him. After about twenty minutes, he took a breath and said, “I’m ready.”
When we got to his house, he tried to give me $100. I shook my head and told him to use it to buy pizza for the kids instead. He squeezed my hand before getting out. In moments like that, you realize we’re all just helping each other find our way.
Another night, a passenger left his wallet in my car. I noticed it was full of cash, but I didn’t touch it. I turned around and brought it back to him. He thanked me, and I told him it was no big deal. I’d only driven about a block before realizing it was there.
As I was about to leave, he called out, “Wait, come back! There’s a lot of money in here.”
I felt a little nervous walking back, but he pulled out the cash and counted it. Then he asked if I knew how much was inside. I told him honestly that I hadn’t looked. There were several hundred-dollar bills in there, way more than you’d expect in a wallet. He looked relieved and said, “It’s all here.”
Then he pulled out two of the hundred-dollar bills and tried to hand them to me. I gave them back and said I didn’t do anything to earn that. He tucked the money into my shirt pocket anyway and said, “Just walk away, good sir,” before heading back inside.
I couldn’t believe it. Just days after one of the worst rides I’d ever had, something like this happened. Life really can turn around in the most unexpected ways.
