The family gathered quietly for dinner, though nobody really wanted to be there. The atmosphere felt heavy and exhausted, like we were all pretending to function while drowning underneath.
Liam had only recently begun speaking again after four years of near silence.

Then suddenly he approached me.
His face looked completely pale.

The room around me disappeared.

Luke’s brother and sister-in-law were arrested and later charged with kidnapping, medical abuse, conspiracy, and multiple additional crimes.
The fallout shattered the extended family completely.
Some relatives claimed fear drove their decisions.
Others refused to forgive them.
Most simply could not comprehend the scale of the deception.
As for Liam, the silence that had trapped him for years finally began breaking.
The weight he carried as a child was finally gone.
And slowly, he started healing too.
Doctors still cannot promise us what Iris’s future will look like.
No one knows whether she will ever fully wake up.

Luke and I sit beside her every single day now.
