A 54-year-old stepmother is now confronting the possibility of spending the remainder of her life in prison after disturbing accusations of prolonged abuse and extreme neglect.
Court documents identify the woman as Renae Elizabeth McCarty, who has been formally charged following the discovery of her 19-year-old autistic stepdaughter in a critically malnourished condition. Investigators report that the young woman weighed just 35 pounds at the time authorities intervened.
A Disturbing Discovery
The investigation was launched after officials received a welfare concern report regarding a resident living in a nearby mobile home community. When law enforcement arrived, they found the property already sealed off as an active crime scene. Images from the location show caution tape stretched across the front steps of the residence, which authorities have described as a “scene of severe neglect.”
Medical experts who assessed the victim emphasized that 35 pounds is an expected weight for a toddler, not an adult woman of 19 years. The victim, who is non-verbal and diagnosed with autism, was reportedly unable to call for help or communicate her condition.
Potential Penalties
McCarty is facing several serious charges, including:
First-degree domestic violence
Abuse and neglect of a vulnerable individual
Reckless endangerment of a dependent minor or adult
Given the severity of the alleged starvation and the victim’s vulnerable condition, prosecutors have stated they will pursue the harshest punishment permitted under law. If found guilty on the most serious counts, McCarty could receive a life sentence.
The victim is currently in critical condition at a specialized medical unit, where doctors are carefully managing her refeeding process due to the dangers of sudden nutrition after extreme deprivation. The case has caused widespread shock, reinforcing concerns about the importance of protecting disabled and dependent individuals from hidden abuse.
