The little box held a bracelet engraved with the words, “Five years down, forever to go.” He explained that he skipped the dinner because he couldn’t afford it, and didn’t want me to see the stress he was carrying. In that moment, my anger dissolved into understanding, replaced by a deep ache of love and gratitude.
That evening, we went home and created our own celebration. We lit candles, shared takeout on the living room floor, and held each other a little tighter.
